On a recent episode of “Shark Tank”, Monique Little and David Dundas locked in a deal with Mark Cuban for their premium hair care accessories business, You Go Natural.

The Dallas-based entrepreneurs were looking for $400,000 for five per cent equity — an $8 million valuation.

But instead, they walked away with $400,000 in debt, plus a $3 per unit royalty for a headband product they will soon sell at Target, a $5 per unit royalty on all other products, and a 10 per cent equity stake in the company.

Made for both women and men, You Go Natural offers a wide range of headwraps, including turbans, buns, headbands, durags, scrunchies, and more. The products are made from quality materials and include a patent-pending design that protects natural hair from harmful chemicals and salts.

Since launching in September 2016, the company has made $15 million in sales.

After a $2 million raise, led by Brand Foundry Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, Capital Factory and Willow Growth Partners, You Go Natural hoped to expand and invest in an 8,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in eastern Dallas.

But they over-ordered inventory and were left with products they couldn’t sell and ultimately had to write off. The founders also spent $3 million on advertising post-raise, which affected revenues.

Those mistakes forced efficiencies, including using excess materials to create the headband products they’re introducing into more than 310 Target stores. At a price point of $10, the duo said it was a good litmus test for the company's move into retail.

With most of the sharks dissuaded by the numbers, Cuban stepped in — the Dallas connection — with a counteroffer at $400,000 for 20 per cent.

Hesitantly, Little and Dundas countered with the final offer reached with Cuban and both sides agreed.

You Go Natural products are available at Urban Outfitters, Target, and on its website.
