Renowned comic Ray Dejon, a veteran co-host of the popular hip-hop show Video Music Box, has opened a Black-owned comedy and live music venue in Brooklyn. The venue, now named 275 Park, was once a supermarket but has undergone a transformation under Dejon’s guidance, as reported by News 12 Brooklyn.

Having established himself as a prominent figure in New York’s entertainment scene with numerous comedy shows across various venues, Dejon is now dedicated to bringing joy and relief to his hometown residents through 275 Park. In an interview with News 12 Brooklyn, he said, “We are the first Black-owned comedy club performance venue in Brooklyn, New York, and one out of two in the entire New York City.”

Dejon emphasized the significance of comedy as a form of relief, describing it as a medicine for communities facing oppression and struggles. Drawing from his journey, which includes 26 incarcerations, the 61-year-old entrepreneur highlighted the power of humour in overcoming challenges. Over the years, Dejon has hosted shows featuring acclaimed comedians like Kevin Hart, Tracey Morgan, JB Smoove, and Mike Epps.

Reflecting on the role of humour in his life, Dejon told Blavity, “I really feel like a sense of humour has helped me through everything, whether it’s incarceration, substance abuse, domestic violence, and now it has afforded me a career in comedy.”

Beyond his contributions to the entertainment industry, Dejon has been actively involved in hosting a diverse range of events, including weddings, fashion shows, sports events, and comedy shows for over 25 years. As the founder of DeJon Entertainment, he has interviewed notable stars such as Stevie Wonder, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Hart, Jamie Foxx, and Alicia Keys during his tenure as the host of Video Music Box.

In addition to his comedic pursuits, Dejon is a motivational speaker, travelling the country to address issues like domestic violence and substance abuse, mainly focusing on engaging with youth. Looking ahead, the New York Kings of Comedy show is set to grace 275 Park during the New Year’s Eve weekend, marking a significant milestone for the newly established comedy and live music venue.

“I’ve created a tremendous service to our community,” Dejon said.
