The National Black Brewers Association has named Oct. 10 Black Brewers Day in the U.S.

Sixteen states have signed on to recognize the contributions and history of Black brewers. Stakeholders say it commemorates a pivotal moment in brewing history, paying homage to the trailblazers who have shaped the industry.

“Although we just launched our association and efforts towards a more equitable and inclusive brewing industry, our team has been hard at work to make sure Black brewers across the United States start to receive the recognition they deserve,” Kevin Asato, president of the Black Brewers Association, said in a statement. “Together with local and state representatives, we are proud to announce this momentous occasion, the first of many to come.”

Stakeholders chose Oct. 10 to honour Theodore A. (Ted) Mack, Sr. and his visionary associates, who, on that date in 1970, celebrated the acquisition of People’s Brewing Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Mack is the first recorded Black brewery president in the U.S., and People’s Brewing Company achieved the distinction of being the first Black-owned brewery in the country.

Mack’s story begins in the cotton fields of Alabama, where he worked as a labourer, showcasing his resilience and determination to overcome challenging circumstances. Over time, he improved his situation and became a notable figure in the civil rights movement.

In 1970, Theodore Mack Sr. purchased Peoples Brewing Co. in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The acquisition was more than just a business move; it was a strategic decision to create employment opportunities in minority communities, addressing the pressing need for economic empowerment and upward mobility. By establishing this brewery, he aimed to promote economic self-sufficiency and foster a sense of ownership and pride within these communities. One of the critical outcomes of Mack’s venture was the production of “People's Beer,” according to the website.

Sacramento council member Rick Jennings led the charge to recognize the holiday, and California Senator Bradford spearheaded statewide efforts. Other cities and states include Louisiana, Oklahoma, Lucas County, North Las Vegas County, Atlanta, Cleveland, Durham, Las Vegas, Little Rock, New Orleans, Montgomery, Sacramento, St. Louis, and Toledo, with more to come in 2024. Over 2,000 guests, including stockholders, local and state legislators, and notable dignitaries, witnessed this momentous occasion.

Launched in March 2023 by NBA legend and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson, the National Black Brewers Association is a 501(c)(6) membership-based non-profit organization.
