Nichole Berry, inspired by her grandmother’s love for fashionable fur coats, has transformed a gifted fox fur coat into a thriving business.

After receiving compliments on her customized creation, Berry launched Heat by Niko in 2020, starting as an online shop and recently expanding to a physical store at 934 W. Madison Ave. in the West Loop in Chicago.

Having invested her savings into the venture after a job layoff, Berry was determined to bring a Black-owned business to the neighbourhood. She aimed to show that Black entrepreneurs could thrive, according to Block Club Chicago.

In starting the business, Berry collaborated with a high-quality fur vendor to bring her vision to life, emphasizing vibrant colours like blue, pink, yellow, and red. She said her designs challenge the conventional notion that fur coats must be monochrome or neutral in colour.

Berry’s business gained momentum through a robust social media following, reaching customers in Detroit, New York, and Chicago. The decision to open a physical store solidified when a customer from Cleveland visited for a custom order, helping Berry to make her mark in brick-and-mortar retail.

“I actually took her measurements and placed an order for her,” Berry said. “People are surprised with the options. I try to have something for everyone… the younger ladies and also a more middle-age… I tried to have something for everybody.”

Despite the challenges involved in the process, from permits to finding the right location, Berry celebrated the grand opening on Black Friday to a full crowd of loyal customers and supporters.

“It was hard, but now that it’s done, it’s the best decision. I feel like I found myself... I get to come to work every day and do something I love.”

Heat by Niko offers a diverse collection of cropped coats made from fox, mink, and raccoon fur, both in-store and online, with prices ranging from $250 to $1,500. Customers can also order custom coats, with Berry taking measurements in-store or online, ensuring a personalized experience.

In addition to fur coats, Heat by Niko has expanded its offerings to include clothing ranging from $40 to $150. Berry said she encourages customers to embrace fashion and have a good time, emphasizing the inclusivity of her shop by catering to a variety of styles and age groups.
