Olajuwon Ajanaku and Earl Cooper are all about disrupting golf's status quo with their urban golf apparel line.

Their company, Eastside Golf, recently announced a partnership with Citi, which invested in the brand through its Action for Racial Equity initiative, a $1 billion fund created to help close the racial wealth gap and increase economic mobility in the U.S.

Eastside Golf has also signed its third golfer, Michael Herrera, in a sponsorship deal to wear its clothing during PGA Tour golf tournaments. Herrera will make his pro debut on January 25-28 at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego, California, at the Torrey Pines Golf Course.

"Inspiring the next generation of young Black golfers and reinforcing the power of diversity is something we're passionate about," Ajanaku and Cooper told HBCU Legends. "We're grateful a brand like Citi has helped elevate our platform to tell our story and promote accessibility in golf."

Eastside Golf’s logo and imagery feature a Black man in a sweatshirt playing golf in jeans, wearing a thick gold chain. The urban fashion line has been worn by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and All-NBA star player for the Boston Celtics, Jayson Tatum, who have publicly supported the brand. Former baseball pitcher C.C. Sabathia, NBA start Donovan Mitchell, and actor Anthony Mackie are also supporters.

In addition, Eastside Golf was the first business chosen to work with Jordan Golf to create the Jordan 4 Golf shoe in 2021.

The partnership with Citi will allow the brand to continue to push diversity in golf and make the costly sport more accessible to the HBCU community and those from underserved communities who cannot afford the fees and equipment that come with the game.

"We continue to use our partnerships in sports and entertainment to address changes that need to be made more accessible and inclusive," Ryan Djabbarah, Citi's head of sponsorships, said in a statement. "We're excited to work with Eastside Golf, and other Black-owned golf brands focused on making the game more accessible to minorities and leading with purpose."

The Morehouse College grads started the company in 2019. They recently discussed their story with The Pivot Podcast, hosted by former NFL players Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor.
