The beer industry has long been out of reach for Black entrepreneurs who look at a monolithic group of businesses that lack representation. However, a craft beer company in Chicago is laying the groundwork and growing faster than even they can believe.

“We're growing very rapidly — a little too rapidly, actually,” Jamhal Johnson, co-founder of Moor’s Brewing in Chicago, said in an interview with ABC7. “We just secured some major retailers here in Chicago and we're looking to deepen our footprint in other markets.”

On Feb. 3, the company announced a partnership with the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL to provide samples at a home game celebration for Black History Month on Friday (Feb. 10) against the Arizona Coyotes at the United Center.

The craft beer is also available for purchase at Mariano's, Jewel, Whole Foods, Binny's, and Kimbark Beverage Shoppe in Hyde Park, the article reads. It has also formed partnerships with Black-owned co-manufacturers and co-packers in the craft beer industry.

“Only one per cent of African Americans own a business that looks like ours in the nation," Damon Patton told ABC7 Chicago. “So, this was our attempt to make sure that Black people are seen in industries where they're typically not seen.”

Winning $10,000 from the South Side Pitch competition, hosted by the Institute for Justice’s Clinic on Entrepreneurship in Oct. 2022, Moor’s Brewing — which sells a session ale, an IPA, and an imperial porter — beat out four other finalists to win, according to Block Club Chicago.

The company was established Juneteenth 2021. The craft beer company is built on the name and marketing of a king from 711 A.D. King Caspar led Moors of Berber (North African) descent across the Strait of Gibraltar between Africa and Europe — conquering Spain for the next 700 years, according to Packaging World.

They introduced new scientific methods to European culture, including a distillation and fermentation procedure that resulted in what they termed "al-Kuhl." The beer brand pays homage to the rich, undiscovered history of its African heritage and the original craft brewers, says the company's website.
