Vimeo has announced its 2022 Best of Staff Picks list, and many Black creators, producers and directors were selected.

Chosen by staff at the video experience platform, the winners were divided into three categories — Best Branded Videos, Breakthrough Creators and Best Videos.

In the Best Videos of the Year category, Brazilian-Canadian director Jorge Camarotti was picked for Ousmane. It’s a short film about an immigrant from Burkina Faso living in Montreal. One day after work, he has a chance encounter with an elderly, disoriented neighbour, setting a series of human events in motion.

Also selected in the Best Videos of the Year category were Black director Kyle Thrash and Haley Elizabeth Anderson. They were chosen for "The Sentence of Michael Thompson," a film about a Black man sentenced to 42 to 60 years in prison due to charges stemming from a low-level 1994 cannabis sale. Thompson remains in prison even as the state where he was arrested despite legalized marijuana use.

Next up was the Breakout Creators of the Year category. British documentary filmmaker Cherish Oteka received the nod for "The Black Cop," a portrayal of Gamal 'G' Turawa, an ex-British Metropolitan police officer who explores his memories of racially profiling and harassing Black people and homophobia in his early career.

The documentary won the award for Best Short Film at the 2022 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). Prior, she produced "A Man Called Dad," a short creative documentary exploring and celebrating fatherhood in the Black community.

Film director Dumas Haddad’s movie, "FLOWERS", was also chosen in the Breakout Creators of the Year category. It's an "afro-futuristic fairytale of love." It’s about a young prince embarking on a potent journey of self-discovery to claim and earn his crown. His short films "Fathers" and "Lost My Faith" were also selected as staff picks.

Film director Justyna Obasi, a Berlin-based creative, directed "Skate Nation Ghana," a commercial for Facebook. However, she was chosen in the Breakout Creators of the Year category for her work on "Young Love," a commercial for Google, and two music videos.

Film director Runyararo Mapfumo of Dessy Mak Productions was chosen for "What’s in a Name?" in the Breakout Creators of the Year category. It’s a story about a handful of Brits exploring their challenges with their non-Western names and celebrating how their names express who they are.

This year's winners were selected from more than 600 staff picks in 2020. All the winning videos are available here.

“Being featured as a Vimeo Staff Pick led to my video being seen across the internet — as a result, it was discovered and shared by Tony Hawk, then featured on the front page of Reddit and beyond. I hosted my video exclusively on Vimeo, so I've been able to see the impact of the Staff Pick directly,” Najeeb Tarazi, director of Best of Staff Pick 2022 winner “One More Try”, said in a statement. “As both a creative and a professional, I host my work on Vimeo because it allows me to connect with a large audience of creative colleagues, including many of the most admired filmmakers and agencies in my industry."
